Garfield Community Action Team (GCAT)

Residents creating a cleaner, greener, safer Garfield.

Bloomfield Garfield Corporation’s Elm Street award was the catalyst for GCAT. Elm Street is a state funded initiative that gives organizational capacity to neighborhoods to focus on improving the physical and social environment of residential areas connected to main business corridors (Main Street Programs).  GCAT’s initiatives and projects are part of the Elm Street five point approach which are:

  • Sustainable Organization- a self-sustaining group where residents should be heavily represented within in the leadership of the committee.
  • Clean Green & Safe-  focus on environmental improvements that yield a safer landscape and enhances a positive community image.
  • Design- projects that enhance or improve the design of the neighborhood and its use of space.
  • Promotion- activities that highlight the neighborhood and create a positive public image for the neighborhood.
  • Economy- activities that make strides towards making an impact on the housing values and community’s economy.

Clean, Green, and Screen

Garfield Pitch-in Project, 2016
Sponsored by the Sprout Fund, with help from Bloomfield Garfield Corporation, Assemble, and Most Wanted Fine Art; the Garfield Pitch-in Project partnered with 15 Garfield residents who adopted and maintained street trash cans to help keep litter off of Garfield Streets.

Love Your Block – Spring 2016
GCAT and neighbors on the 100 Block of N. Pacific Street in Garfield were awarded $900 to spruce up and greet up the Dearborn Street side of the Bloomfield Garfield Community Center.  Perennials were purchased and many neighbors and volunteers came out to help improved the space.

Love Your Block – Summer 2012
GCAT was awarded a Love Your Block (LYB) grant for $1000 to fix up a corner lot at Mathilda and Mossfield, in addition to sprucing up our Garfield Vets Memorial on Penn Avenue.

Love Your Block – Summer 2011
In the summer of 2011 GCAT was awarded a Love Your Block grant. With grant money, the selected groups purchase equipment and supplies, engage their neighbors, and roll up their sleeves to carry out their own brand of block beautification and repair. GCAT and the BGC have utilized the Love Your Block to create a safer pathway to Fort Pit School, make minor improvements to the Garfield Gators Field, and to clean up a problem lot at the top of Hillcrest and North Atlantic Street.

Sunflower Lot with GTECH

Sunflower Garden, 2011
In the spring of 2011 GCAT partnered with GTECH Strategies to clean up a large vacant lot on the corner of Broad and Graham Street. This lot is highly visible and has been used as a frequent dumping site. This fall the corner will bloom with beautiful tall sunflowers. These sunflowers clean the soil, and make the lot more ready for the creation of a sustainable community use. GCAT will be planning the long term Sustainability of this lot over the winter months with hopes of implementing a permanent solution in the spring of 2012.

Clean Street Team & Garfield Gardeners
Working with the Pick Up Penn Clean Streets Team,CISP, and local university students, GCAT participates in monthly community clean-ups. Garfield Gardeners keep our flower beds on Penn Ave blooming and weeded.  We’re always looking for helping hands for both clean-ups and green -ups! Check the GCAT calendar for upcoming clean-up events.

Kite Hill Park Project Summer 2012, GCAT volunteers have been working on improvements to Kite Hill Park.  Workers from CISP have been working hard maintaining the site, picking up litter and mowing the grass.  Volunteers have been building a unique seating design to add to the park so visitors can watch the pick-up basketball games.  Learn more about the Kite Hill project, here.

Green + Screen Design Projects
Green + Screen is a project that addresses vacant lots and un-screened parking lots along Penn Avenue.  Each site and screen has been design and built by volunteers from the community.  See all the Green + Screen sites mapped out on our Garfield Map.

Neighborhood & Family Events

Neighborhood Events Garfield is a unique neighborhood, we have a lot history and long-time residents.  We also have a lot of new residents moving to the neighborhood as well.  We want to create opportunities for neighbors to meet and kids and families to get together.  We plan many events through out the year like Cookies and Crafts with Santa, Fall Family Fun Days at Kite Hill, and National Night Out for residents to promote safety on their block.
